EMD built the 4336 in November 1976. In became Missouri Pacific 2274 after the Rock Island shutdown and then became UP 2274 on Nov 13 1986. On Oct. 3 2000 UP renumbered the unit to 774. No silver lining for The Rock |
| Description: |
This picture somewhat symbolizes the Rock Island in its later years to me. Driving across the Texas Panhadle parallel to the Rock Island's Amarillo to El Reno main on a cloudy day you spy a light in the distance and jump off the road to get the shot. It seems to take an awful long time to get to you- and you realize it's only doing about 25 to 30 MPH. The blue unit looks good but its a facade for the dirty maroon units behind; the track conditions are hardly befitting a 'mainline' and the cars sway as they go by. You get friendly waves from the Rock crews, as usual, but the scene confirms what you already know; that the road is in serious trouble. GP38-2 4338 is trailed by GP35s 321, 329 and U28Bs 269, 255. |

ENID OK April 13 1980 -- CRIP GP38-2 4346 is tied up at the Enid engine facility. This unit wears the name Navajo Nation. A quick trip to the Rock Island Technical site revealed this unit was originally named Senior Traveling Freight Agent. That name "recognized John W. Barriger, the widely respected rail official who was brought aboard to help turn the Rock Island around. The locomotive was to be named for Barriger, but he requested this name as an alternative. After John Barriger's death, locomotive 4346 was renamed Navaho Nation in June 1977. Navajo track crews, particularly rail relay gangs, handled much of the rebuilding efforts on the Sunbelt [Choctaw Route] line, and the Golden State line." (quote taken from RITS web site) |
